Let's start with what's gone wrong.
Companies have trained AI on people's photos and posts without asking. Anyone's voice can be cloned in an afternoon. Data centres are going up next to gas plants while household bills rise. And decisions about benefits and jobs are being handed to machines nobody can question.
None of that is the technology's fault. It's what happens when a powerful tool arrives before the rules do.
We think AI could be the best thing to happen to ordinary people in a generation, if it plays by fair rules. It can do the paperwork that eats your evenings. It can explain a letter from the council in plain English. It can give one person the reach of a small team. That is worth fighting for.
So this petition asks the UK government for five safeguards. It doesn't ask anyone to pause or stop. Signing it means yes to AI, on fair terms.
What signing means
“I want a future with AI. I'll back it when five things are true: my data is mine, my face and voice are mine, a human is always available, the power is clean and paid for by them, and it's free for everyone.”

Data centres are getting the discount.
The government is offering data centres in its new AI Growth Zones cheaper power and faster grid connections, with discounts planned from April 2027. Nothing yet says the power must be clean or that your bill won't rise.
There is still no AI law.
The UK has no AI Act. Other countries are deciding what AI can and can't do to their citizens. Here, for now, the companies decide.

Fair Future Safeguards is run by Field Level Tech, a UK not-for-profit tech company. We build tools that put technology in ordinary people's hands, and we already lend a serious AI workstation, free, to people who couldn't otherwise get one.
We're not against AI. We think it should belong to everyone, and these five asks are how you get there.
We stand with the Make It Fair campaign on copyright and creators' rights. That's a fight they lead, and we back them. Ours is the rest of the list.
We don't take a party side. This asks the UK government, whoever is in it.

Isn't this an anti-AI petition?
No. It's the opposite. We think AI can do a great deal of good for ordinary people, and we want it to. This petition sets out the conditions that make that possible. Signing says yes to AI, on these terms.
Why not just pause it?
Because a pause only works if everyone pauses, and they won't. The companies that already have the data and the power would carry on. Safeguards change what AI is allowed to do to you, whoever builds it. That's a fight we can win.
Who is behind this, and who pays for it?
Field Level Tech Ltd, a UK not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. In plain terms: no shareholders, and any surplus goes back into the work. We'll list every organisation backing the campaign on this page as they join.
What does “free AI for everyone” actually mean?
A publicly owned AI helper you can use at home for nothing, with no adverts and no selling of your data, paid for the way libraries are. Switzerland's universities have already built one. Alongside it, the skills to use AI well taught in every school by 2028, and offered free to anyone whose job is changing.
Why isn't copyright on the list?
Because the Make It Fair campaign is already fighting for creators, and doing it well. We back them. Adding our own version would split the effort. Our five asks cover the things nobody else is campaigning for.
What happens to the signatures?
We deliver them to the government, and to every MP whose constituents have signed, with the five asks attached. If you've said we can email you, we'll tell you what comes back.
What happens to my details?
