Fair Future Safeguards · Ask 4 of 5

Clean power, paid for by them.

Data centres that take public support run on clean energy and never add a penny to your bills. AI should warm homes, not the planet.

What happened

Someone pays for the power.

AI runs on electricity, a lot of it, and on water for cooling. In the United States, data centres are being built next to gas plants, and there are places where household bills have risen to pay for the grid upgrades they need.

The UK is now offering data centres in its AI Growth Zones cheaper power and quicker grid connections. Nothing in those plans yet says the power has to be clean, that the water use has to be published, or that the cost won't land on your bill.

What we're asking for

Clean, open, and not on your bill.

The ask, in full. Data centres getting public support must run on 24/7 clean power, publish their energy and water use, feed waste heat into local homes, and never push costs onto household bills.

What changes for you.

  • Any data centre taking public money or a discount runs on clean power every hour of the day, with the receipts published.
  • You can look up how much energy and water the data centre near you uses.
  • The heat they throw away warms local homes and pools instead of the sky.
  • Grid upgrades for data centres are paid for by data centres. Your bill doesn't move.

Who already does this.

The EU already requires large data centres to report their energy and water use, and to put their waste heat to use where they can. Towns in Denmark, Finland and Sweden already heat homes with it. It works. The UK simply hasn't asked for it.

Why this is good for AI.

Because the alternative is a backlash that stops the whole thing. Nobody wants a gas plant next door so a chatbot can answer faster. Data centres that run clean and warm the street are the kind people will let be built. That does more for AI than a decade of planning fights.
