Fair Future Safeguards · Ask 5 of 5

Free AI for everyone.

A public AI helper with no adverts and no data selling, and the skills to use it taught in every school and library.

Where we are

The best help costs money.

The best AI tools cost twenty pounds a month or more, and the free versions increasingly come with adverts and a business model built on your data. So the people who could gain most from a tireless helper (someone juggling two jobs, someone fighting a benefits decision, someone learning to read) are the least likely to have one.

Meanwhile the people who already have money and time get better at using it every day. Left alone, AI widens the gap. It doesn't have to.

What we're asking for

A helper in every home.

The ask, in full. A publicly owned AI helper, free to use at home, with no adverts and no selling of your data. Good AI use taught in every school by 2028, in libraries, and free training for every job seeker and anyone whose job is changing, with extra funding for deprived areas.

What changes for you.

  • An AI helper you can use at home for nothing, that isn't trying to sell you anything, or sell you on.
  • Your children learn to use AI well, and to spot when it's wrong, in school by 2028.
  • Your library can show you how, in person.
  • If your job is changing, free training is there before you need it, with more money for the places that have had the least.

Who already does this.

Switzerland's public universities built Apertus, an AI model paid for by the public and open for anyone to use. Estonia is putting AI tools and lessons into its secondary schools. And at home, Field Level Tech already lends a serious AI workstation, free, to people who couldn't otherwise get one. Small proof that the idea works.

Why this is good for AI.

This is the ask that makes the other four worth having. Safeguards stop AI being used against you. This one puts it in your hands. A leveller only levels if everyone gets one.
