Fair Future Safeguards · Ask 1 of 5

Your data is yours.

Nobody trains AI on your posts, photos or messages unless you actively say yes.

What happened

Take first, ask never.

In 2024 Meta began using UK adults' public Facebook and Instagram posts to train its AI. You could object, if you knew about it and found the form in time. Most people never heard there was a form.

That's the pattern across the industry. Take first, offer an opt-out later, count on nobody using it. Years of your photos, your jokes, your grief and your kids' birthdays, turned into training data by default.

Your data has value. That's why they want it. The question is who gets to decide.

What we're asking for

Opt in, or it's off limits.

The ask, in full. No company may use your posts, photos or messages to train AI unless you actively opt in.

What changes for you.

  • The default flips. Your posts, photos and messages are off-limits for AI training until you say otherwise.
  • Consent has to be asked for plainly, in a question you actually see, with no penalty for saying no.
  • You can change your mind, and the company has to honour it.
  • Companies that want your data have to give you a reason to share it. Which is how it should have worked all along.

Who already does this.

Nowhere has got this fully right yet, which is exactly why the UK can lead. The closest so far: regulators in the EU made Meta pause its training for almost a year and forced clearer objection rights. We want the obvious next step. Opt in, rather than opt out.

Why this is good for AI.

Does AI trained only on consented data mean worse AI? It means AI people are willing to be part of. Plenty of us will happily share data with a service we trust, once we're asked properly. Trust is the thing the industry is currently burning through. This rebuilds it.

Yes to AI, on fair terms.
